Avoiding Digital Dangers:

Safely Teaching Using Tech

This pbWiki is meant to help teachers navigate around some of the potential risks of online technologies. You can never make any community completely safe, and online communities are no exception. Additionally, what is "safe" can still be a legal risk to teachers, so some of those nasty issues will be addressed on this pbWiki. From the predator pretending to be a high school student to the corporation data mining your students' online habits, knowing how these people think and use the Internet can help you avoid unnecessary distractions from teaching.

Topics I will address include:

But I Know Better...

Too often people assume they know the digital dangers and have taken plenty of steps to protect themselves. The reality is, even most computer techs make mistakes. It is easy to do "all the right things" and still end up the victim of a digital danger.

The risks are even greater with the days of technology. Some don't realize that their cell phones are also considered computers and can be hacked. Many young people use their phones and computers to access their facebook. Facebook is a place where people post too much of their information, which allows people to cause more damage to an individual.  Big brother is in the form of the computer and phone these days. Be aware.

Example Risks

The worst security threats come from Phishy Crooks — those scam artists who try to trick you into giving them credit card numbers, usernames, and passwords. These people are using very low-tech tricks that work in the "physical world" as often as they work online. Most other risks are lot easier to avoid. If adults don't always recognize scams, you can guess why phishers target students — easy prey!

Another major security issue, and one schools often overlook, is just how vulnerable some wireless networks are. The section on Wireless Woes deals with how dangerous some networks are — and how to address the issue.

Trojans are at risk often. They are not just a condom or a school mascot, they are common viruses. It sounds funny for it to be a name of a condom yet be a virus at the same time. It is a risk that effects many.
